I grew up in London, England.
I took my first journey at the age of 5.

When I was 12 I read about the Inca trail in a magazine.
I didn’t keep the article and the idea lay dormant for many years, but somehow I knew one day I would do it.
At the age of 18 I took my first real trip overseas.
It wasn’t far, just across the channel to France, but I will never forget the exhilaration I felt in being in a foreign country, eating unfamiliar food, listening to a language I could barely understand and seeing unfamiliar sights.
That five day trip awakened a passion for travel that I have maintained to this day.
I went on to spend 18 months in Paris.
I learnt the language, I certainly enjoyed the food and the sights of Paris became as familiar, if not more so, than my home town of London.

This was just the start.
Over the next few years I spent two months in Switzerland, a year in New York, eight months in Montreal and two years on a kibbutz in Israel.
My particular highlight for that period was a week in Beirut, Lebanon..

That was basically it.
Exotic destinations were finally beckoning.
I spent three years working for a major courier company and was able to travel to Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, where I saw the river bank of Laos and for the briefest moment I was even allowed to cross the border from Thailand into Burma.
Yes I know that doesn’t quite count but technically I can say I went to Burma.
I even spent a day on an Indonesian Island.
I traveled alone to India, Nepal and Pakistan and looked over the border at Afghanistan (closed to foreigners), from the romantic sounding Khyber Pass.

I packed a backpack and took my seven year old son overland by train across 11 European countries, which included many of the former Iron Curtain countries: Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.
This was before McDonalds was a familiar sight on the streets of Sofia, Warsaw or Prague.
Thank goodness for Budapest..

This started a 7 year period of traveling with my son.
It was an eye-opening experience for both of us and together we crossed many a dark and mysterious border.
We went on safaris in Kenya, saw pygmies in Uganda, discovered the dark and dreadful truth of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, traveled from Ho Chi Ming City all the way to Hanoi by bus, saw condors in Peru, bargained in markets in Ecuador and yes the little seed that had once been sewn as a child of 12 was finally realized when we reached Machu Picchu after hiking the Inca Trail..

He does his own travels today and I continued mine.
I went to South Africa which was beautiful and spent a few days at a luxury lodge in Zambia, close to Victoria Falls.
It was a real treat from the constant traveling on a budget.
I spent two weeks in Germany and was totally mesmerized by Berlin.
I even did a Caribbean cruise.
I returned to South America and went to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay and even spent a few hours in Paraguay.
My special highlights were Ushuaia; there is something magical about being in the world’s most southern town and seeing the Rio Carnival.
I did the Trans Siberian railway between Moscow and Vladivostok I will always remember that as my worst journey, but for anyone who has traveled somewhere you didn’t really enjoy, you are never sorry you did it.
My strangest destination was North Korea.
It was probably the most isolated and strange country I have ever been too.
My most recent trip was to South Korea and it was fascinating to see the other side of the border.
I also went to Japan which to date was probably the most impressive country I have ever been too..

Lastly I would like to define myself with my favourite poem.
