Intercambiar y actualizar conocimientos y experiencias profesionales fue el principal motivo que tuvieron aquellos profesionales de la ingeniería en vías terrestres que el 19 de septiembre de 1974 fundaron la Asociación Mexicana de Ingeniería de Vías Terrestres, AMIVTAC.. . Según lo expuesto por los fundadores, esta asociación les permitirá mantenerse relacionados y a la vanguardia sobre todo en cuestiones de la infraestructura que tanto necesitaba el México de aquel entonces. En su mayoría eran de la generación número 14 de egresados de los cursos de especialización de Ingeniería de Vías Terrestres promovidos por la que en esos tiempos se llamaba Secretaría de Obras Públicas, SOP, hoy Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes y por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM.. . La agrupación no se logró a la primera, tuvieron que intentarlo varias veces y vencer algunas barreras, como aquellas de la distancia física o lugar de residencia de los ingenieros, o la diversidad de sus ocupaciones que a pesar de poderse agrupar en un mismo contexto profesional eran ocupaciones en las que la tendencia era celar sus conocimientos y así el constructor de un puente para ferrocarril se negaba a compartir sus experiencias y conocimientos con aquellos que estuvieran construyendo un puente carretero y viceversa, tan sólo por citar un ejemplo, pese a ello, su sincera dedicación y gran empeño minimizaron lo que parecía una unión con grandes dificultades.. . Los especialistas consideraban que no existía un foro institucional para lograrlo, situación que mermaba considerablemente la comunicación y el intercambio de conocimientos y experiencias, además no se contaba con un centro de actualización y capacitación para mantenerse a la vanguardia en el desarrollo tecnológico.
