Detailed description is Altrusa is a non-profit organization of business and professional women who have a passion for literacy. Altrusa International is the oldest women's service organization in the nation, founded in 1917. The Springfield club has been serving our community for more than eighty years, since our founding in 1921. . . Altrusa clubs exist in all parts of the United States and numerous other countries. Despite issues of international concern, Altrusa is, first and foremost, a community-based, grassroots organization that seeks to solve the problems in our own backyard. . . The first President of our club was a distinguished Springfield leader, Margaret Baker, President and CEO of The Champion Co., a remarkable achievement for a woman in the 1920's. She remained a member of Altrusa for over 50 years. . . Altrusa International of Springfield meets monthly and welcomes new members who want to enjoy club events and the camaraderie of working for a worthwhile cause.. . Club members are busy preparing for the 16th Annual Literacy Sting, to be held September 24, 2013, from 11:30 - 1:00 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Springfield.. .
