Detailed description is . Der Altenberger Dom ist die ehemalige Klosterkirche der seit 1133 von den Zisterziensern errichteten Abtei Altenberg. Bis 1511 war das Gotteshaus auch Grablege der Grafen und Herzöge von Berg sowie der Herzöge von Jülich-Berg. Das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude steht im Ortsteil Altenberg der Gemeinde Odenthal im Rheinisch-Bergischen-Kreis.Altenberger Dom ist die von jeher gebräuchliche Bezeichnung für die Klosterkirche, wobei das Wort „Dom“ in diesem Fall nicht auf die Kathedralkirche eines Bistums hinweist, die es in Altenberg nie gegeben hat. Der Altenberger Dom befindet sich im Eigentum des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen und wird seit 1857 simultan von der römisch-katholischen und der evangelischen Gemeinde als Pfarrkirche genutzt.Bauwerk und BaugeschichteDer Dom als Kirche der ZisterzienserabteiDer Altenberger Dom wurde als Klosterkirche mit dem Patrozinium St. Mariä Himmelfahrt ab 1255 auf der Stelle eines romanischen, um 1160 geweihten Vorgängerbaus errichtet. Die Zisterzienser waren 1133 nach Altenberg gekommen und hatten mit dem Bau einer Abtei begonnen. Gegen Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts zählte die Abtei bereits 107 Priestermönche und 138 Laienbrüder, so dass der Bau einer großen Kirche ins Auge gefasst wurde. Graf Adolf IV. von Berg legte am 3. März 1259 unter Anwesenheit des Kölner Erzbischofs Konrad von Hochstaden den Grundstein zum Bergischen Dom. Gemessen am Baubeginn ist er damit in etwa so alt wie der Kölner Dom. 1287 wurde der Chor geweiht, Am 3. Juli 1379 folgte im Auftrag des Kölner Erzbischofs die Gesamtkonsekration durch Bischof Wikbold Dobilstein von Kulm, der im Hochchor des Domes bestattet ist. Das große Westfenster wurde um 1400 eingesetzt.
