The sorority of Alpha Chi Omega was founded on October 15, 1885 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana by seven music students.
Excluded from DePauw's existing sororities because of their enrollment in the musical academy, these pioneering women — Anna Allen, Olive Burnett, Bertha Deniston, Amy DuBois, Nellie Gamble, Bessie Grooms and Estelle Leonard — started the organization to seek "friendship, artistic society and advancement of the ‘principles of true womanhood.’” Foreseeing the extraordinary sisterhood Alpha Chi Omega would become, the DePauw Monthly newspaper read the next day: "Alpha Chi Omega Launches Out With Brilliant Prospects.".

Almost a hundred years later, a group of 55 women brought Alpha Chi Omega to Cornell University on February 4, 1984 as the sorority's Zeta Phi chapter.
Zeta Phi has since grown tremendously, with 180 current members and a beautiful, white house on 509 Wyckoff Road.
Zeta Phi is the oldest of the four Ivy League chapters of Alpha Chi Omega.
