Detailed description is Alleghany Rescue Squad provides specialized rescue and emergency medical services for the citizens and visitors of Alleghany County. The Alleghany County Rescue Squad was established in 1969 with a group of 20 people wanting to make a difference in the lives of the citizens of Alleghany County. The Squad was organized after an unfortunate fatal automobile accident occurred just north of Sparta in which the two teenage victims were trapped and no specialized rescue or emergency medical services existed in the county at the time. Due to the extended length of time it took to extricate the vicitms from the car, their lives were lost. Alleghany County Rescue Squad was formed to help prevent another tragic story such as this from occurring.. . We are nonprofit, and we are fully volunteer. The rescue squad relies on donations from the citizens of the county to continue to provide services - which are provided at no cost to victims.. . The Alleghany Rescue Squad is on-call for response 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are ready to respond to any event, from a person needing an ambulance for a medical call, to an automobile accident with victims trapped, to a lost hiker off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, to a drowning victim on New River, to a rock climber in trouble in Stone Mountain State Park. The squad has approx 23 active members including 10 paramedics, 2 EMT-I and several EMT-Basics that are certified with the state of North Carolina. We also have 5 medical auxiliary members whom are all paramedics and serve at stand-bys and medical calls. There are also multiple certified Technical Rescuers amongst our ranks including TR certified for vehicle and machinery extrication, rope rescue, wilderness rescue, and agricultural machinery. We also have a dive team for dive search and recovery.
