In the early 1980s the Australian Sports Commission first suggested an idea of a Masters Games and the philosophy of Masters’ sport. The development of Masters’ sport included an underlying belief that each participant is a champion in his or her own right, as long as the physical and mental attributes for each stage of life have been maintained at their optimum levels.. . The Northern Territory Government immediately embraced the idea, seeing potential opportunities for economic and social development benefits. In 1986 the first Masters Games event in Australia was held at Alice Springs.. The 1986 Alice Springs Masters Games (then called the Central Australian Masters Games) became the second event of its kind to be staged anywhere in the world. The only previous multi-sport Masters Games was the 1985 World Masters in Canada. . . The Alice Springs Masters Games concept was highly successful and quickly earned the reputation of ‘The Friendly Games’ because of the camaraderie and good spirited nature of the competitors. That spirit is now carried around Australia and overseas by the thousands of people who have experienced the event.. .
