Ans: Alex Shchegol is the President and Founder of ASA College. Founded in 1985, ASA College continues to be one of the most rapidly-growing, multi-million dollar private colleges. Since founding the school, Shchegol has grown the institution to include more than 4,000 students and close to 1,000 employees across locations in downtown Brooklyn, midtown Manhattan, and North Miami Beach, Florida. Prior to founding ASA College, Shchegol began his career in the engineering field. In 1975, he graduated with an engineering degree from the Leningrad Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics in St. Petersburg, Russia. Upon his arrival in the U.S. in 1977, he worked as a computer programmer. He developed computer applications at a time when the computer industry was still in its nascent stage. He also started teaching computer programming to fellow Russian immigrants whom he helped to prepare for job interviews. Little did Alex know at that time that this teaching experience would be a turning point in his career. Using a teaching methodology whose core principle was the imperative of constant interaction between teachers and their students, Alex’s number of students steadily grew. When it reached more than 60, he felt an overpowering desire to start a school. Shchegol is the recipient of numerous awards notably the 2005 Torch of Honor Award from the New York Association of New Americans (NYANA) and the 2004 Immigrant Excellence Award from the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, and Hispanic Caucus. In 2005, he was inducted to the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce where he continues to be an active board member. Alex Shchegol is also on the Board of Directors of the UJA-Federation of New York.
