Bernard Webb.
.
Mr.
Webb is following in his father's footsteps at Sammye E.
Coan Middle School.
In the Edgewood/Kirkwood communities, you can often hear the whispers, "Is Mr.
Webb still teaching?" The answer to the question is yes and no.
Jesse Webb, Sr.
is peacefully retired and enjoying life with his wonderful wife, Gloria Webb of 39 years.
However, Jesse Bernard Webb, Jr.
is hard at work trying to keep the tradition and legacy alive.
As a youngster, Bernard Webb, Jr.
often watched his parents spend many hours tending to the students at their schools.
(Gloria Webb was a High School Counselor at Avondale High School) However, he was often found hanging with his father at football games, basketball games, etc...
He quickly noticed that his father played a similar role to all his students.
He was an educator, support system, life coach, and even a father to some.
He worked long hours teaching night school to help better the community members of Edgewood and Kirkwood.
.
.
Today, Jesse Bernard Webb, Jr.
is taking on the huge responsibility of carrying his father's legacy.
The hard work and determination that was instilled in him from his father's actions runs through his veins.
At Coan Middle School Mr.
Webb is a huge part of the puzzle of success.Mr.
Webb demonstrates exceptional knowledge of his content area.
He consistently delivers high-quality instruction and standards-based differentiated learning opportunities for all students.
In addition to excellence in the classroom, Mr.

November 2010 Called To Teach.
.
Teacher of Year Belita Hamilton, an instructor for the After-School All-Stars program at Brown Middle School for two years, has received many accolades for her contributions to education.
She has been recognized as the 2010 Brown Middle School Teacher of the Year, Atlanta Public School's Middle School Teacher of the Year and Atlanta Public School's Overall District Teacher of the Year.
She has benefited our kids by using innovative techniques to teach math to students, has been in charge of the Hip Hop Studio, HOPSPorts program, and cheerleading at Brown Middle School.
As a native of Atlanta, GA and the youngest of six children, her parents instilled in her at a very early age the importance of an education.
Both of her parents at one point in their lives were educators.
In the 4th grade she became a student in the Atlanta Public School System, attending Fickett Elementary School, Bunche Middle School, and Mays High School.
Once Belita decided that she wanted to become a teacher, she knew that she had to give back to the community that opened many doors for her to be successful.
She has been blessed to work within dynamic professional learning communities that are made up of master teachers.
These master teachers encouraged her not to assume that her duties remained in the four walls of her classroom, nor did her duty end at 3:45.
These teachers taught Belita the importance of working as a team player, participating in professional development, getting parents involved, and most importantly, establishing a positive and respectful relationship amongst students.
Mrs.
Hamilton could acknowledge each master teacher that influenced her, but instead sherecognized that they all had one common denominator; the vigilance to make a positive impact on the lives of our youth.
We would like to thank Belita Hamilton for all she does to improve the lives of the kids we serve and for the impact she has made in educating students at Brown Middle School..

Sandy Springs Middle School - Our New School.
.
After-School All-Stars would like to welcome Sandy Springs Middle School as the newest addition to the family.
Sandy Springs Middle School is an ideal school for the After-School All-Stars program, as this school stresses heavily the importance of balancing academic achievement with extracurricular involvement.
As a recent Science Olympiad Winner, Academic Bowl Winner, and Peace Movement Winner, it is no wonder that SSMS has been selected as a Georgia School of Excellence.
Janet Lane and Sabrina Taylor have been chosen as the new site coordinators of the school.
They have already kicked off the year with a registration drive to sign up students for this terrific after-school program.
We are looking forward to working with Sandy Springs Middle School in the upcoming year.
Many thanks to our partners at SSMS - most notably the Couchman and Noble Foundation and the Sandy Springs Education Force..

Kicking Off The Year.

When it comes to providing first-class services for the kids we serve, After-School All-Stars is always ready to oblige.
This month the students at Long Middle School had a wild time at Metro Skates while the kids at Sandy Springs Middle School participated in martial arts and attended a Falcons football game.
After-School All-Stars has also introduced new project-based learning initiatives.
Crime Scene Investigators (CSI Atlanta) gave the students an opportunity to learn forensic science and the process that takes place in gathering evidence for crimes, including taking pictures, analyzing fibers, collecting fingerprints, and testifying in court.
Also, the students learned about running a zoo by playing Zoo Tycoon and received lessons in history, politics, and geography from the computer game Civilization.
The kids also participated in the Hip Hop Studio program to display their artistic and musical talents while practicing math, science, English, and other core subject areas.
We at After-School All-Stars are looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for the kids..

The All-Stars Score A Touchdown!.
.
The Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation has shared a strong partnership with After-School All-Stars for a very long time, and this month the collaboration has been taken to a new level.
During the summer, the students of Harper-Archer Middle School took part in the Kids and Pros Football Camp, a week-long football camp for kids.
This camp was facilitated by former NFL Football Players and took place at Clark Atlanta University.
The participants of this camp practiced various drills, including punting, passing, and kicking.
The students received specialized training for individual positions such as wide receiver and quarterback, and they also participated in obstacle course competitions.
Throughout the camp the kids learned about the importance of teamwork, integrity, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
This turned out to be an extraordinary camp for the kids and for the coaches.
After-School All-Stars extends a special thanks to the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation for offering their time and resources for the kids that we serve..

Fun In The Sun At Coan Park.
.
For two years the Mustang Summer Academy has provided students from Parks Middle School the opportunity to put on amazing dance performances at Coan Park.
This year The Georgia Department of Human Resources, with the help of volunteers from Coca-Cola, organized a special event where the kids put on dance performances to pay tribute to Michael Jackson.
These dance performances took place while the students were listening to songs composed by the King of Pop.
Afterwords, the kids took part in field day activities like basketball, tug-of-war, and sack racing.
Parks Middle School also had a display of all the enrichment clinics that took place during the Mustang Summer Academy.
Two thumbs up for After-School All-Stars!.
.
Enriching The Lives of Kids.
.
Enrichment is what After-School All-Stars is all about.
The students participated in jewelry making classes, played Nintendo Wii games, and had matches in Connect Four, Checkers, and other boardgames.
Furthermore, the After-School All-Stars kids also participated in the MIRACLES Technology program to learn skills in clay animation, web design, and database development.
One of the programs that took place during the All-Stars Summer Academy was "Think College," which exposed the kids to information on preparing for college.
This information consisted of the history, locations, and programs of study at universities such as Georgia State University, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse College.
As the summer came to a close, the schools celebrated all the great clinics that took place during the All-Stars Summer Academy.
The Mighty Mustangs of Parks Middle School participated in a Family Night Event where they wore costumes, sang songs, and put on dance performances.
Turner Middle School took its students to Malibu Grand Prix to watch Go Karts and Bumper Boats.
With all the excitement that has been taking place this summer, it will be interesting to see what After-School All-Stars will have in store for the kids during next year's summer academies..

.
Kimberly Gittings, the winner of the Miss Georgia USA 2009 Pageant, has been serving as a spokesperson for After-School All-Stars this summer.
She visited the four schools that have been participating in the Summer Academies, speaking to the girls about the importance of eating a nutritious diet.
Ms.

The Wonderful World of Reading.
.
For the third summer in a row After-School All-Stars has organized literacy clinics to help middle school students and rising 6th grade school students improve their literacy skills.
Graduate students from Georgia State University's Department of Middle-Secondary Education, led by Dr.
Lori Elliott of the GSU Urban Literacy Clinic, have been helping students at Parks Middle School develop their vocabulary, reading comprehension, and speed reading skills.
This year the three other summer camp programs have also participated in the literacy clinics to hone their literacy skills.
Even more exciting is that Atlanta Dream, a team of the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), went to Turner Middle School to help the students become more engaged in reading.
Tameka Garrett, the Community Relations Manager for Atlanta Dream for the team, along with Jennifer Lacy and Tamara Young, two of the WNBA players, introduced the kids to a book called "Money Hungry." They read parts of the book to the students and also invited some of the kids to read a few pages.
At the end they quizzed the students on the book and gave door prizes to students that provided correct answers.
After the quiz the kids lined up to receive autographs from the WNBA players, as well as gift bags and books.
The Atlanta Dream also generously donated tickets to After-School All-Stars for their basketball games at Phillips Arena..
.
Enriching The Lives of Kids.
.
Enrichment activities, field trips, sports clinics, you name it, After-School All-Stars has got it! This summer camp has definitely been the most spectacular one yet, as now four schools have participated in the All-Stars Summer Academy! The Mighty Mustangs of Parks Middle School are back for their third summer camp and they have been learning how to cook through the Operation Frontline program, received lessons in web design and clay animation while participating in the MIRACLES program, and were taught the art of hair cutting from a licensed barber.
The kids of Long Middle School went to Panthersville Stadium to participate in a soccer clinic and played basketball at the Georgia State University Sports Arena.
They also enjoyed the thrills of exciting rides at Dixie Land Fun Park.
The students of Brown Middle School had an opportunity to go to the Panthersville Stadium of Georgia State University to play softball and then went to Centennial Park for some recreational activities such as card playing and boardgames.
The kids from Turner Middle School had all sorts of enrichment activities this summer.
Some of these activities were jewelry making, drama, scrap-booking, and Hip Hop Radio.
The Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation and Centennial YMCA donated a HopSports program to all of the schools, allowing the kids to practice exercises such as Pilates, martial arts, and breakdancing.
Thanks to our good friends at the Georgia Aquarium, all the students took a field trip to the world's largest fish tank..

The Girls of Coretta Scott King Score A Home Run.
.
As a result of a generous grant from the Cal Ripken Sr.
Foundation, 10 young ladies of Coretta Scott King Young Women's Leadership Academy were able to go to Aberdeen, Maryland for a whole week of excitement.
They went with 2 adult counselors to participate in the Cal Ripken Baseball Camp, a summer baseball camp that builds character and teaches critical life lessons to disadvantaged young people residing in America's most distressed communities.
They not only played baseball, but also participated in drills to practice skills such as pitching, catching, and batting.
But most important of all, they learned about the importance of teamwork in sports.
After-School All-Stars extends its thanks to the Cal Ripken Sr.
Foundation for organizing and funding this incredible baseball camp.
As much fun as the girls had playing baseball, they had just as much excitement with all the other activities that they participated in at the Carl Ripken Camp.
They got in touch with nature by taking hikes in the lush forests and getting views of the gorgeous water while kayaking.
Moreover, they also went to some restaurants to eat delicious food and their bus rides to and from the camp allowed them to strengthen their bonds with each other.
This is one experience that the ladies of Coretta Scott King Young Women's Leadership Academy will never forget..
.
Art & Music Appreciation.

The Awards were presented at the 2009 Agnes M.
Jones Invitational Art Education Fair of the Atlanta Public Schools.
Furthermore, the students that After-School All-Stars serves have been privileged to get the opportunity to play Guitar Hero, a popular game on the Nintendo Wii, for this has not only provided a fun experience for the kids, but also an educational one.
This game has been used to enhance the motor skills and hand-eye coordination of the students.
Learning has taken place when students were engaged in an activity, and the notes on Guitar Hero have also been applied to math.
The rhythm and patterns needed to play the song correctly correspond to finding patterns and similarities when solving simple and complex algebra problems.
After-School All-Stars and Nintendo Wii get two thumbs up for an exemplary commitment to benefiting the youth of Atlanta..
.
Sherlock Holmes, Meet the All-Stars.
.
The dynamic students of Turner Middle School had an in-depth study of forensics.
This enriching learning experience allowed them to find out how to use their senses to investigate crimes.
Each day offered various challenges, ranging from comparing soil examples by physical and chemical means to analyzing fingerprints, photographs, and hair fibers.
The participants practiced what they learned in different scenarios and at the end of the study the students put together a poster board that contained their research.
Elementary my dear All-Stars!.
.
Time To Celebrate.
.
There comes a time to work and there comes a time to celebrate.
