Uma colônia de pescadores implantada no local onde hoje está a prefeitura deu origem ao município de Japaratinga. Na época, o que existia era alguns barracos à beira-mar e parte das terras era ocupada com lavouras. A ocupação da região começou por volta de 1800, data em que se inicia também a exploração do côco. Uma estrada que dava acesso apenas a animais ligava a rodovia principal - hoje AL-101 Norte - a Porto de Pedras, passando por Japaratuba, nome primitivo de Japaratinga. . . A igreja matriz foi erguida há mais de 300 anos pelos holandeses que residiam em Porto Calvo e continua até hoje conservada em seu estado original. Em 1935, existia um pequeno estaleiro onde eram construídos navios de pequeno porte para o transporte do côco. . . Motivos políticos levaram os líderes locais a lutarem pela autonomia administrativa, liderados por José Jorge de Farias Sales, chefe político de Maragogi. Em 1960, através da Lei 2.264, o município foi desmembrado de Maragogi, mas sua instalação oficial só ocorreu em 30 de junho do mesmo ano. . . Japaratinga é hoje importante pólo turístico e a beleza exótica de suas praias é fascinante. Em Barreira do Boqueirão - a principal delas - tem traços primitivos e seus principais encantos são as nascentes de água mineral, onde os visitantes desfrutam do tradicional banho de bica. O mar de Japaratinga é calmo, sem ondas e de águas mornas que possibilitam deliciosos passeios de jangada às piscinas naturais, como também o rio Manguaba ideal para passeios de jangada visitando manguezais e uma natureza exuberante. .
