Doğumu: 1185 yılında Tebriz’de dünyaya gelen Şems-i Tebrizi'nin asıl ismi Mevlana Muhammed’dir.
Melik Dad oğlu Ali adında bir zatın oğludur ve Azeri Türklerindendir.
Şemseddin yani dinin güneşi lakabıyla anılmıştır.

Çocukluğu ve Gençliği: Şemseddîn-i Tebrîzî hazretleri, Tebriz'de ilim öğrendi ve edeb üzere yetişti.
Daha küçük yaştayken mânevî hallere, üstün derecelere kavuştu.
Kendisi şöyle anlatır: "Henüz ilk mektepteydim.
Daha bülûğ çağına girmemiştim.
Peygamber efendimizin sevgisi bende öyle yer etmişti ki, kırk gün geçtiği halde, O'nun muhabbetinden aklıma yemek ve içmek gelmedi.
Bâzan yemeği hatırlattıklarında, onları elimle yâhut başımla reddederdim.
Göklerdeki melekleri ve yerde gayb âlemini, kabirdekilerin hallerini müşâhede edebilirdim..

Yetişmesi: Daha sonraları Secaslı Şeyh Rukneddin, Tebrizli Selahaddin Mahmut ile büyük alim ve ünlü mutasavvıf Necmüddin Kübra’nın halifelerinden Centli Baba Kemal’e intisap ederek onlardan feyz almıştır.
Hz.
Muhammed (S.A.V.)'in ahlâkını örnek alan Şemseddin-i Tebrizi, devamlı bir arayış içerisinde olmuş, manevi bir işaret üzerine de Hz.
Mevlana’yı arayıp bulmuştur.
Dünyaya, kılık ve kıyafete önem vermeyen Şems, Mevlana ile üç- üçbuçuk yıl süren beraberliği neticesinde onun hayatında yeni ufukların açılmasına vesile olmuş, onun ilahi aşkın potasında eriterek, kamil bir Hak aşığı yapmaya muvaffak olmuştur..

Vefatı: Mevlana’da meydana gelen büyük değişikliği hazmedemeyenler, onun Mevlana’dan ebediyeyen ayrılmasına sebep oldular.
Şems Hicri 645 Miladi 1247 tarihinde şehit mi edildi, yoksa geldiği gibi, kimseye haber vermeden Konya’yı mı terk etti kimse bilmez..
