Detailed description is അമ്മേ ശരണം ദേവീ ശരണം പത്തിയൂരമ്മേ ശരണം.... ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളുടെ കാലത്തോളം പഴക്കമുള്ളതും പരശുരാമനാല്‍ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടതും, ഭാരതത്തിലെ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ 108 ദുര്‍ഗ്ഗാദേവീക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലോന്നുമാണ് "മേജര്‍പത്തിയൂര്‍ ശ്രീ ദുര്‍ഗ്ഗാദേവീക്ഷേത്രം". ഭയഭക്തിവിശ്വാസത്തോടുകൂടി ഭജിച്ചാല്‍ ആയുരാരോഗ്യവും സമ്പദ് സമൃദ്ധിയും മനഃശാന്തിയും പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ക്ഷിപ്രപ്രസാദിയായ ദേവിയാണ് ഭക്തജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ദര്‍ശനമരുളി ശ്രീകോവിലില്‍ കുടികൊള്ളുന്നത്.. . മഹാഭാരതത്തിലെ ഖാണ്ഡവദഹനം കഥയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടത്താണ് പത്തിയൂര്‍ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്‍റെ ഉല്പത്തി. അഗ്നിഭാഗവാന്‍ ബ്രാഹ്മണവേഷധാരിയായി കാളീ തീരത്തു താമസിക്കുന്ന അര്‍ജുനന്‍റെ മുന്നില്‍ വന്ന്, കഠിനമായ വിശപ്പു മൂലം അവശനായ തനിക്ക് മതിയാവുവോളം ഭക്ഷണം നല്‍കണമെന്ന്‍ അഭ്യര്‍ഥിച്ചു. വിശന്നു വന്ന ബ്രാഹ്മണന് ഭക്ഷണം നല്‍കേണ്ടത് തന്‍റെ കടമയാണെന്ന് തോന്നിയ അര്‍ജുനന്‍ സസന്തോഷം ഭക്ഷണം നല്‍കാമെന്ന് സമ്മതിച്ചു. ഖാണ്ഡവവനമാണ് അഗ്നിഭഗവാന്‍ ഭക്ഷണമായി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. തക്ഷകന്‍റെ ആവാസ സ്ഥലമായ അവിടെ എപ്പോഴും മഴ പെയ്യുന്നതിനാല്‍ ദിവ്യാസ്ത്രങ്ങളെക്കൊണ്ട് ഒരു ശരകുടമുണ്ടാക്കി തന്‍റെ ആഗ്രഹം സാധിച്ചു തരണമെന്നും അഗ്നിഭഗവാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. അര്‍ജുനന്‍റെ അപേക്ഷപ്രകാരം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണഭഗവാന്‍ ദിവ്യാസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ എയ്ത് ശരകൂടമുണ്ടാക്കുകയും അഗ്നിദേവന്‍റെ ആഗ്രഹം സഫലമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദിവ്യാസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ 'എയ്ത ഊര്' 'ഏവൂര്‍' എന്ന് പില്‍ക്കാലത്ത് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. ആഗ്നി 'കത്തിയ ഊര് ' കത്തിയൂരായി. കത്തിയൂര്‍ ക്രമേണ "പത്തിയൂരായി"ത്തീര്‍ന്നു. തെക്കേയറ്റത്ത്‌ പത്തിയൂരും വടക്ക് കുമാരനല്ലൂരും ശക്തിസ്വരൂപിണിയായ കര്‍ത്യായനിദേവിയുടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകള്‍ നടത്തപ്പെട്ടതിനാല്‍ അഗ്നി അതിനുള്ളില്‍ മാത്രം ഒതുങ്ങി നിന്നു. ഈ രണ്ടു ദേവീക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും ഒരേ ദിശയിലാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. പുരാതനകാലത്ത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു ചുറ്റും ധാരാളം വനങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്നും ഖാണ്ഡവദഹനത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ടു പോയതുമാണെന്നുള്ളതിന്‍റെ തെളിവാണ് ക്ഷേത്ര സമീപത്തെ പല ഭാഗങ്ങളും കുഴിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മണ്ണിനടിയില്‍ നിന്നു കിട്ടുന്ന കത്തിയ വന്‍ മരങ്ങളുടെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍..... . എണ്ണൂറോളം വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് അഗ്നി ബാധയുണ്ടായി. വിഗ്രഹം ഇളക്കിയെടുത്ത്‌ രക്ഷിക്കാനായി തന്ത്രിയും പൂജരിയുമുള്‍പ്പടെ നാല് ബ്രാഹ്മണര്‍ ശ്രീകോവിലിനുള്ളില്‍ കയറി ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും ബിംബം ഇളകി വന്നില്ല. ഇതു കണ്ട സമീപവാസിയായ ഒരാളും ശ്രീകോവിലിലേക്ക് ഓടിക്കയറി. ഇവരഞ്ചുപേരും അഗ്നിയില്‍പ്പെട്ടു മരിച്ചു. ഇളക്കിയെടുക്കുവാനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തിനിടയില്‍ വൈകല്യം സംഭവിച്ച വിഗ്രഹം മാറ്റി, 1139 കുംഭം 12-ന് തന്ത്രിമുഖ്യന്‍ തിരുവല്ല പരംബൂരില്ലത്ത്‌ ചിങ്ങന്‍ നാരായണന്‍ ഭട്ടതിരിയുടെ പ്രധാന കാര്‍മികത്വത്തില്‍ പുനഃപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടന്നു. അഗ്നിയില്‍പ്പെട്ടു മരിച്ച അഞ്ചുപേരേയും ഇതോടൊപ്പം നാലമ്പലത്തിനു പുറത്ത് രക്ഷസുകളായും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു.. . ചെമ്പുമേഞ്ഞ വൃത്താകൃതിയിലുള്ള ശ്രീകോവിലില്‍ കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദര്‍ശനമായി ഉദ്ദേശം മൂന്നരയടി പൊക്കമുള്ള ശ്രീടുര്‍ഗ്ഗാഭാഗവതിയുടെ ചതുര്‍ബഹുക്കളോടുകൂടിയ വിഗ്രഹം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. നമസ്ക്കാരമണ്ഡപം, ചുറ്റമ്പലം, ബലിക്കല്‍പ്പുര, കൊടിമരം, സേവപ്പന്തല്‍, ഗോപുരം, ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളങ്ങള്‍ മുതലായ ക്ഷേത്രഭാഗങ്ങളുണ്ട്. നമസ്ക്കരമണ്ഡപവും ബാലിക്കല്‍പ്പുരയുടെ മച്ചും കമനീയമായ ദാരുശില്‍പ്പങ്ങളാല്‍ അലംകൃതമാണ്. കായംകുളം രാജകുടുംബവുമായി വളരെയടുപ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ശ്രീ കളീക്കല്‍ പണിക്കരായിരുന്നു പഴയകൊടിമരവും ഊട്ടുപുരയും പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചത്. ജീര്‍ണ്ണിച്ച കൊടിമരം മാറ്റി പഞ്ചലോഹനിര്‍മ്മിതമായ പുതിയ കൊടിമരം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചത് 1129 കുംഭം 13 ന് ആയിരുന്നു.. . ഭഗവതിക്കുപുറമെ നാലമ്പലത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ ഗണപതി, ശിവന്‍, ഹനുമാന്‍ എന്നീ ഉപദേവന്‍മാരേയും നാലമ്പലത്തിനു പുറത്ത് ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണന്‍, ശാസ്താവ്, രക്ഷസുകള്‍, നാഗരാജാവ്, നാഗയക്ഷി, യക്ഷിയമ്മ, ശിവന്‍ എന്നീ ഉപദേവതകളേയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.. . . .
