It has been five years since the Hokkaido Shinkansen began operations, but business is struggling, partly due to high prices compared with airlines, ferries and other shinkansen operators.
For example, airlines offer early purchase discounts, and Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Central) offers a variety of discounts to attract business travelers. Ferry companies are also providing special services amid the coronavirus pandemic.

KAIYO, Tokushima Prefecture Asa Seaside Railway Corp. has conducted its first test of a dual-mode vehicle (DMV) capable of running on both railway tracks and paved roads.
The Kaiyo-based semi-public company, which operates railway lines in Tokushima and Kochi prefectures, tested the commercial DMV on the Asato Line on Dec. 15.
Hokkaido Railway Co. (JR Hokkaido) had previously operated a test DMV on rail tracks on a trial basis.
During the test, Asa Seaside Railway’s DMV shifted from “bus mode” to “train mode” at the “mode interchange” facility newly installed at Awa-Kainan Station in Kaiyo. In about 15 seconds, a pair of wheels appeared under the front and rear of the vehicle body to touch the rails, lifting the rubber tires at the front.

Tokyo, Dec. 23 (Jiji Press) The Japanese government is set to offer additional financial assistance to Hokkaido Railway Co., or JR Hokkaido, and Shikoku Railway Co., or JR Shikoku, which have both seen their net losses expand amid the novel coronavirus crisis, it was learned Wednesday.
The government will continue its existing support programs for the two firms, which are slated to end in fiscal 2020 through next March, into fiscal 2021 and later, informed sources said. Fresh investment is also being studied to help improve their financial standings, according to the sources.
Relevant legislation will be submitted to next year s regular session of the Diet, the country s parliament, slated to start in January, the sources said.
