Some Livingston County businesses struggling with new mask rules

While Michigan officials repealed the state s mask mandate for fully vaccinated people, businesses, libraries and other institutions can decide their own policies.  Many businesses in Livingston County are still asking all customers to wear masks indoors. And that is turning out to be a struggle for some. Tristan Spindler said customers yelled, swore and spit at her Saturday when she was working at Screams Souvenirs in Hell. Spindler said they were angry the store has not changed its mask policy.  We re under a lot of pressure. I try to be forgiving and take deep breaths, and I know it s not personal, but it s been rough, she said.

Last week, the Livingston Diversity Council, in partnership with the Livingston County chapter of the League of Women Voters and the Howell Carnegie District Library hosted the online program “Learning From Our Past to Create a Better Future.” Diversity Council Board President Nicole Matthews-Creech led the event, challenging the narrative that racism exists everywhere and that’s just the way it is. She said that while it is not exclusive to our community, Livingston County does have a unique and critical connection to it.

Whitmer’s press conference Friday in which she urged a two-week suspension of in-person high school classes, all youth sports and indoor restaurant dining, at least one local school district is taking action. In his weekly video update (posted below), Pinckney Superintendent Rick Todd said they would pause both in-person instruction and sports at the high school next week, with most students going to online learning. Todd pointed to the 19 confirmed COVID cases since Monday in the district, which he said was as many as they normally see over the course of a month. Todd said most of the cases occurred over spring break, and “we re definitely feeling the impact of that and I think we re going to continue to feel the impact of that.
