No child left hungry
Children of all ages throughout Alachua County will again be fed breakfast and lunch this summer.
Thanks to a federally funded food service program that runs from Monday through July 23, children from infants to 18 years old can receive free breakfast and lunch at 93 locations with a multitude of options that include in-person, bus routes, curb side grab and go and the Alachua County School District s food truck, which visits underserved neighborhoods including Hidden Oaks, Majestic Oaks and the Swag Family Resource Center.
All the children have to do to get a meal is to show up at a feeding site during meal times.

Alachua County Public Schools Superintendent Carlee Simon tries to avoid the term “rezoning.” She prefers the term “re-imagining” when discussing the comprehensive changes being considered by the school district.
Rezoning is certainly a loaded term. School Board and district officials dodged a comprehensive rezoning for decades, in order to avoid the controversy that comes with redrawing the maps that determine where students attend school.
But now overcrowded schools and racial equity issues are forcing a district-wide rezoning to be done. Just building additional schools in high-growth areas on the west side isn t a solution, instead creating new problems for the district’s finances.
Nicole Harris of Gainesville High School was named Alachua County s 2021 Teacher of the Year last Thursday night in a livestreamed ceremony. She will go on to the state s program this summer where she has a one in 67 chance of becoming the Florida 2022 Teacher of the Year. I m shocked, she said. I stand on the shoulders of giants.
Harris told The Sun after her name was called that the county Teacher of the Year title was not just an honor for herself. I m just one person in this great force of educators. This award tonight is about all of the educators that affect communities and generations, she said.
