Hoan Bridge Lights Up Red To Celebrate The Life Of Mildred Fish-Harnack In Milwaukee

September 16 is Mildred Fish-Harnack Day in Wisconsin, and if you don't know that is, you're not the only one. Despite the courageousness of her life's work, fighting the Nazis as a founder of the Red Orchestra, an anti-Nazi resistance group in Germany, much of her story has been lost over time. In honor of her life, the Hoan Bridge will be lit in red.

Governor Tony Evers (D-Wis.) has proclaimed Black Nite Remembrance Day throughout Wisconsin on the anniversary of that August 5, 1961 night. It is the first official recognition of the historic event by any civic entity. Partnering to make the remembrance day happen are Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, first out city councilmember Ald. JoCasta Zamarripa, the county board of supervisors, and the city council. But the commemoration was a long time coming, with the advocacy of Wisconsin LGBTQ historians and activists Michail Takach and Don Schwamb of the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project.
