A sunset walk through downtown Phoenix has never been spookier or more educational than when it is taken with Marshall Shore and his co-host, Debe Branning, on their monthly haunted walking tour.
The next available tour on Saturday, April 10 at 6 p.m., will mark seven months since the pair began ushering guests on a two-hour, two-mile excursion to the paranormal side of the city.
Shore, also known as Arizona’s Hip Historian, has been educating the public on the lesser-known side of the Grand Canyon State’s history since its 100th anniversary of statehood in 2012.

Not that the downtown Phoenix pub isn t abiding by the rules. On a recent Saturday evening, seating is spaced to appropriate social distancing levels. Masks are being worn when people aren t sipping from pint glasses. There s no live band, only a Spotify playlist. Scruffy-looking doorman John Jersey Mazur, clad in a black hoodie and neck gaiter, is keeping things at half-capacity.
But Seamus McCaffrey s has rowdy good times built into its DNA, and in many ways, this COVID-era weekend night isn t unlike the thousands that have preceded it here on the ground floor of the Hotel San Carlos, at Monroe Street near Central Avenue. Out front, smokers swap stories at full tables. The sound of clinking glasses and laughter punctuates a thrum of Celtic punk coming from the sound system. Packs of drinkers five or six strong keep rolling up to the front door, IDs in hand. Inside, the clientele reflects the changing neighborhood

In honor of Black History Month, organizations, activists and businesses in metro Phoenix are hosting virtual and in-person events throughout the month that recognize works in arts and music, historical figures and contemporary issues.
This year’s theme, chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.” ASALH will offer virtual programming throughout the month “in observance and celebration of the strengths, struggles, resistance and the sheer perseverance of the Black family.”

Anhelo Restaurant 628 East Adams Street For years, the Silva House operated as the Rose & Crown an English pub and haven for college students till its closing in 2018. By spring 2019, the house became Anhelo Restaurant. This upscale dinner spot with a soft, modern interior is is where pop-up chef Ivan Jacobo is operating in Historic Heritage Square. The menu of contemporary American fare offers Hudson Valley Foie Gras to black truffle gnocchi and scallops, so this may be more of a special occasion place.
