A year later, Dallas-area residents feel renewed sense of freedom on the Fourth
While some remain cautious of big crowds, many bask in relief and joy at once again being able to celebrate the nation’s independence outdoors and together.

Freedom has new meaning in America this Fourth of July weekend even the fundamental freedom of assembly has new implications.
Three WSU students received awards from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
Over 5,000 students from 438 institutions across the country applied to be nominated, and 1,256 went on to be nominated for the award, according to the foundation’s website.
Selected students must study natural science, engineering or mathematics. Of those nominated, 409 students received the $7,500 award, according to the website.
India Dykes, junior bioengineering major, spent months working on the application, and was excited when she found out she won.
“I felt like it was really validating to have my research recognized since I’ve worked on it for the last two years,” she said.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation has announced that Washington State University juniors India Dykes, Haley Morris, and Gunnar Sly have each received $7,500 awards for the coming year, said April Seehafer, director of the WSU Distinguished Scholarships Program.
Prestigious national Goldwater awards are given to highly qualified undergraduates intending to pursue careers in math, the natural sciences, or engineering.
Dykes, a junior from Spokane, is majoring in bioengineering in the Voiland School of Engineering and Biosciences in the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. Her mentors are Arda Gozen, Bernard Van Wie, and Anita Vasavada.
