Ally Kemp of Unionville crowned 2021 Michigan Sugar Queen
Through the Michigan Sugar Queen Scholarship Program, the queen and two attendants serve for one year as ambassadors for Michigan Sugar Company. After completing the requirements of the program, the queen receives a $2,000 scholarship and each attendant a $1,000 scholarship to be used to help pay for college.

A spiritual connection with the land was broken for a Manawatū iwi after it lost land to the Crown in the 19th century, a Waitangi Tribunal has heard. Members of iwi Ngāti Te Au spoke about their loss of land at a Waitangi Tribunal hearing, the Manawatū ki Porirua inquiry, at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom in Foxton on Tuesday. This week of hearings, the fifth of 12, concerns the area around Foxton, but is part of the Ngati Raukawa iwi confederations treaty claim on the historical purchase of about 130,000 hectares of land between Manawatū and Kāpiti. Raukawa claims the area was not bought legitimately, but confiscated by the pen.
Bell is a vocalist in the universityâs production of âSongs for a New World.â
During a rehearsal, Bell had a slight mishap when she walked offstage as the set went dark after a musical number.
âI went to get one of the chairs I needed to grab and completely fell on top of the light and ended on the floor,â she said.
Bell is OK and thinks the show is one audiences could fall for, too â albeit not physically.
The public is invited to in-person and livestream performances of the universityâs latest production, which start at 7:30 p.m. March 11-13 and at 2 p.m. March 14 in Kimmel Theatre on the Midland campus.
