This week we have unearthed more great photos and news stories from the 1990s. In August 1991, Stuart Mansfield, a 15-year-old from Little Sandhurst, was declared one of the country’s top paperboys after winning a competition in the Daily Mail. He was given the Paperboy of the Month accolade for July after he comforted an elderly lady during one of his paper rounds whose husband had just died. In October 1991, baby Erin Melissa was born in Heatherwood Hospital’s car park after a quick labour of an hour and five minutes meant mum Julia Humphrey, from North Ascot, never made it to the maternity ward.

It really doesn’t get much better than that,” said Kaylee.  Kaylee’s story In December 2014, Kaylee Chavez was only 10 years old. With bad headaches and no appetite, the family was told it was only a virus.  “One morning, she rolled over and got sick, too weak to even get out of bed,” said Kaylee’s Mom, Jen Chavez. On December 5 th, the doctor saw a tumor on the CT scan and told the family that Kaylee would need brain surgery. Her odds of survival were only 50 percent. She survived the surgery, but her cancer had spread: There were spots on Kaylee’s spine. She was allowed to go home at Christmas but everyone was so worried it would be their last one with their beloved daughter. 

Christmas toy giveaway is held in Fontana for children who are battling cancer

Thanks to a Fontana woman s determined efforts, a Christmas toy giveaway took place on Dec. 20 for children who are battling cancer. Lulu’s Village of Hope with Notes, led by Lourdes Lulu Goni, partnered with the Children s Cancer Foundation of Southern California to hold the drive-through event at a Fontana cul-de-sac. The purpose of this event was to bring a little spark of Christmas hope into the lives of these children who are unfortunately having to battle a life-threatening disease, Goni said. We have lost so many children to this disease. It is our calling to help make this Christmas as special as we can, in the safest way possible.
