Americana and normalcy are expected to be on full display in September when the Hesperia Days Parade and Celebration returns after the coronavirus pandemic canceled last year’s festivities.
This year will mark the 72nd edition of the event that first began in 1948 when 13-year-old Lillian (Stratton) Platt, wore the crown as the first Miss Hesperia and rodeo queen.
Hesperia Recreation and Park District General Manager Nicolas Chavez, who was hired in July 2020 and missed out on his first Hesperia Days experience, said the popular two-day event is slated to begin Sept. 18 with a full day of activities.

Jewel Leilani Wilmoth, described by those who knew her well as a “caring soul” who loved her family and touched countless lives through her involvement with the Lions Club of Spring Valley Lake and the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council, has died. She was 64.
Wilmoth died Friday at her home in Victorville after recently being diagnosed with COVID-19, according to her niece, Laura Cotter, who said further details surrounding her passing were forthcoming.
“We got together on Thanksgiving and just before Christmas,” said Cotter, 35, a resident of San Bernardino. “My aunt would frequently stop by, sometimes once a week, but we didn’t get to see her at Christmas because she wasn’t feeling well.”
