The St. Helena Planning Commission on Tuesday approved a use permit for a distillery on Fulton Lane.
John Hardesty of Hundred Acre Wine Group wants to convert 3,050 square feet of an existing 5,560-square-foot warehouse at 1020 Fulton Lane to a distillery that could produce up to 52,800 gallons of brandy and whiskey per year. Actual production is estimated at 22,900 gallons, split evenly between brandy and whiskey.
The beer and wine used in the distillation process will be sourced from local growers, vintners and brewers.
Water used in production will be trucked in from an off-site spring, making the project water-neutral. Wastewater from the distillation process will be stored on-site and trucked away for treatment.

The St. Helena Planning Commission will consider an application for a distillery on Fulton Lane at its next virtual meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 20.
The proposed distillery would be at 1020 Fulton Lane, in part of an existing wine warehouse next to Fulton Body Shop.
The distillery would produce about 22,900 gallons annually, split evenly between whiskey and brandy.
According to a staff report, the project complies with St. Helenaâs water-neutrality requirement for new development. All water for production will be trucked in from an off-site spring. Wastewater generated from distilling would be stored on-site and hauled away.

Marcus Kirkwood was riding his bike through St. Helena last month when he noticed a man take a photo of him from the sidewalk.
Kirkwood at first wrote it off as poor timing. Maybe the man was taking a picture of a house across the street. Kirkwood turned his bike around and asked. The man told him he often took photos in St. Helena of things that he found “suspicious.” He meant Kirkwood.
