Germany hands over 14 artworks looted under Nazi rule
More than a dozen artworks pillaged under the Nazi regime have been returned.
In total, German officials have handed over 14 works once belonging to collector Cornelius Gurlitt, the national government stated on Wednesday.
The Carl Spitzweg drawing “Piano Playing” was presented to Christie’s auction house on Tuesday at the request of the heirs of its rightful owner, Henri Hinrichsen, reported The Associated Press.
Hinrichsen died at Auschwitz in 1942.
The artwork was confiscated from the Jewish music publisher in 1939 and was purchased by Gurlitt’s father, Hildebrand Gurlitt, who traded in Nazi-seized art, noted The AP.
