I was born in New York City and lived there until we moved to New London in 1943. However, the New York that I talk about occasionally always refers to Staten Island, which is nothing like the New York City we all see on TV and in the movies. That âNew York Cityâ is Manhattan Island, which is just one of five NYC boroughs, and is very different from the rest.
Even though Mom and I only went over to Manhattan once in a while, I still felt that I knew âthe cityâ â as New Yorkers refer to Manhattan â fairly well. After all, how many times do you have to see skyscrapers, ride subways, shop large stores like Macyâs and Gimbelâs, attend theaters, or glide past the Statue of Liberty and Governorâs Island on the ferry before they become just part of the background of your life? However, I may have known as much about the city as most city dwellers do, but in truth I knew next to nothing about what kept it running.

The owner of the Indian Point nuclear power plant, the prospective owner and several stakeholders, including New York state, have reached an agreement regarding the decommissioning of the Westchester County-based plant. This comes as the plant permanently shuts down by the end of the month.
The joint proposal has been submitted to the New York state Public Service Commission for approval and is available for public comment. The provisional agreement was negotiated by New York state, current Indian Point owner Entergy, Holtec International, Westchester County, the local school district and local governments, Riverkeeper and the Public Utility Law Project. If approved by the PSC, the agreement would transfer ownership of the nuclear power facility to Holtec, which would be responsible for the decommissioning and remediation of the facility and site. Richard Webster is legal program director for Riverkeeper.

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Parents of the Yorktown senior class have partnered with Yorktown High School and local businesses to create a schedule of monthly events to celebrate the senior class. The success of the Yorktown parents’ plans led to the spread of senior celebration ideas across Westchester and to parents in states around the country.
The Yorktown parents’ involvement began with a Facebook post by senior parent Tracey Falcone right after Christmas. Her post asked if any parents wanted to get involved in planning events for their senior children, who had already lost half of their junior year and the first half of their senior year.
