Jim Langley, president of the Hoover Historical Society, led a guided tour through Oak Hill Cemetery in downtown Birmingham on Friday morning and many of those following him through the oak-shaded lanes were descendants of one of the famous families buried there. “The people that founded Birmingham are pretty much all buried here,” said Langley, author of “Tales of Oak Hill,” about the 1871 cemetery located just west of the BJCC Legacy Arena. The cemetery was founded the same year as Birmingham, 150 years ago.

The Hoover City Schools Foundation, like many nonprofits, had a challenging year in 2020 but was able to bring on a new executive director on a permanent basis. Shelley Shaw, the wife of Hoover Councilman Mike Shaw, had been serving as interim executive director for the foundation since October of 2019, following the departure of former Executive Director Janet Turner. A year later, the foundationâs board of directors unanimously decided to make that a permanent change.
