Consumers Energy has donated $500,000 to protect Michigan’s environment.
One of the groups receiving the money is Huron Pines, a conservation organization that works all across the state. They’ll receive $200,000 for the Protect Wild Places Project, which looks to restore 5,000 acres of wildlife habitat. It will also maintain 150 miles of inland waterways and shorelines across the Great Lakes.
The money will allow Huron Pines to reach out to more organizations who can help clean and take care of the environment.
“It allows us to do more hands-on work with more local communities, watershed groups, businesses, all kinds of different partners, all the people that it really takes to protect land and water,” said Brad Jensen, Executive Director of Huron Pines.

Huron Pines project to build new bridge over Pigeon River near Vanderbilt
By Paul Welitzkin, pwelitzkin@gaylordheraldtimes.com
VANDERBILT Conservation organization Huron Pines is breaking ground this month on a new bridge where Ford Lake Road crosses the Pigeon River at a popular campground east of Vanderbilt.
The road will remain closed while a set of culverts are removed and replaced with a timber bridge to correct issues with erosion, fish passage and road safety.
“We chose a timber bridge for this project because it completely opens up the flow of the river for recreationists, fish and wildlife and blends in well with the natural landscape. The bridge will also be designed to accommodate high river flow to alleviate future flooding issues,” said Josh Leisen, senior project manager for Huron Pines.
