Gene-based blood test for melanoma spread evaluates treatment progress

 E-Mail
A test that monitors blood levels of DNA fragments released by dying tumor cells may serve as an accurate early indicator of treatment success in people in late stages of one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer, a new study finds.
Led by NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Perlmutter Cancer Center researchers, the investigation looked at adults with undetectable levels of freely circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) four weeks into drug treatment for metastatic melanoma tumors that cannot be removed surgically (unresectable). The study showed that these patients, all of whom had common genetic changes (BRAFV600 mutations) linked to cancer, were living nearly twice as long without cancer growth as those who continued to have detectable levels. ....

Routine blood tests could be key to stopping the silent killer of liver disease

 E-Mail
New research has shown that results of blood tests routinely performed by GPs everywhere contain a hidden fingerprint that can identify people silently developing potentially fatal liver cirrhosis.
The researchers have developed an algorithm to detect this fingerprint that could be freely installed on any clinical computer, making this a low-cost way for GPs to carry out large scale screening using patient data they already hold.
Liver cirrhosis is the second leading disease causing premature death in working-age people (after heart disease). It develops silently and most patients will have no signs or symptoms until they experience a serious medical emergency and the first admission is fatal in one in three patients. Unlike most major diseases, the mortality rate for liver cirrhosis continues to increase and is now four times higher than forty years ago. ....

Study provides new insights into the mechanism of bone marrow tissue

Study provides new insights into the mechanism of bone marrow tissue
Imagine a day when clinicians treating people with blood diseases such as leukemia or multiple myeloma can send in requests for laboratories to custom-produce specific types of blood cells to replace those affected by the disease.
That day became one step closer to reality with a new study led by experts at Cincinnati Children s that provides powerful new insights into how bone marrow tissue works.
The study, published Feb. 10, 2021 in
Nature, was led by senior author Daniel Lucas, PhD, and first authors Jizhou Zhang, MD, and Qingqing Wu, PhD, from the Division of Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology. Co-authors include a team of scientists from Cincinnati Children s and the University of Cincinnati, plus collaborators in Colorado, Texas and Michigan. ....

Tumor microenvironment helps aggressive lymphomas

Tumor microenvironment helps aggressive lymphomas
The environment surrounding the cancerous cells of a lymphoma tumor has a strong influence on the progression of these blood-cell cancers and their responses to therapies, according to a new study by Weill Cornell Medicine investigators.
Measuring this molecular and cellular environment, or “microenvironment,” appears to represent a new type of precision-medicine approach to lymphoma classification and treatment.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
The team analyzed the patterns of gene activity in tumor samples taken from the lymph nodes of thousands of lymphoma patients. They found that the cells within these tumors, which include both cancer cells and healthy cells, produce molecules that collectively constitute a distinct microenvironment for the tumors, influencing their biology and growth. ....
