(AP) Authorities are investigating the death of a Kentucky woman who was caught in a flash flood in a canyon near the Arizona-Utah border. Coconino County Sheriff’s officials said they received a call Saturday evening about a possible drowning at Labyrinth Canyon on Lake Powell. They said 43-year-old Heather Rutledge of Louisville was hiking the canyon Saturday afternoon with her husband and three sons when they were all caught in a flash flood. Authorities said Rutledge’s husband and children survived, but the woman’s body wasn’t recovered until Sunday due to heavy debris in the water.

Her family found Heather but CPR attempts were unsuccessful. The husband and kids went back to their rental boat to get help, only to find it damaged from the flood and was undrivable. A boater in the area was able to pull the boat out of the mouth of the canyon and contact the National Park Service. Due to weather and lake conditions at the time, they recovered the body the next morning. Rescuers swam through flood debris and located her body Monday. She was taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff. No additional information is available.
