Animal charity CEO faces new fraud charges Albert Adams (Source: Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office) By ABC7 Staff | February 18, 2021 at 10:48 AM EST - Updated February 18 at 10:48 AM TAMPA, Fla. (WWSB) - The convicted former CEO of a Tampa Bay-area animal charity faces new charges of filing false pet insurance claims. Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office prosecutors have filed six new felony fraud charges against Albert Adams, who ran the nonprofit organization Soaring Paws. Investigators allege Adams signed up for a pet insurance policy, which would reimburse him for his pets’ medical expenses. He then filed five claims and received payment last year for nearly $13,000 worth of procedures for his two pet dogs that were never performed. The pet insurance provider, Healthy Paws, suspected fraud and contacted law enforcement.

A cop was arrested. Six months later, the case was dropped. What happened?

Updated Feb. 3 TAMPA — How could a respected cop be accused of threatening to shoot a detained man, only for prosecutors to conclude he committed no crime? In the case of former Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Sgt. Janak Amin, a defense attorney’s probe suggests a rushed and flawed investigation, one that may have been influenced by politics. Although three of Amin’s fellow sheriff’s deputies claimed he threatened a man deputies were trying to restrain during a July 9 arrest, at least seven others said they never saw or heard the sergeant do anything wrong, according to the attorney’s summary of the case. Use-of-force experts likewise opined that the sergeant’s actions were consistent with standard law enforcement practices.

Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren plans to ask a Grand Jury to indict Travis Garrett for first-degree premeditated murder of a law enforcement officer and eight other charges. “This was a deliberate attack on law enforcement; he targeted a cop. When you commit a crime like this — when you cause pain like this — you should expect consequences like this,” Warren said. “Despite losing a friend, the detectives handling this case are completely focused. They’re doing an incredible job working with our prosecutors
