At right, Daily Press Building owner David Phillips prepares to install restored door hardware created in 1937 by W.L. “Oxy Bill” Hamlett. Inset, Hamlett shows off some of the ornamental ironworks which he is famous for while in his shop, just days after his 80th birthday in 1967.
The iconic Daily Press building on Market Street in Silver City is in the process of receiving a facelift, after replica doors replaced the originals, and the ironwork hinges and handles created by famous Silver City welder ※Oxy Bill” Hamlett received a copper plating.
※Basically, these doors were so far gone that they couldn’t be preserved or restored,” said David Phillips, the owner of the Daily Press building. ※So I basically built brand-new doors based on the design of the old doors. And [the style of] those doors [is] prevalent throughout the entire building.”
