Welsh landowners face action over ‘illegal’ river works >More in © Debbie James Natural Resources Wales (NRW) says it is taking enforcement action against landowners who have carried out illegal work on rivers and streams after using satellite imagery to gather evidence. Although NRW hasn’t named the locations involved, it has issued a warning to landowners in Wales after what it describes as an increase in reports of gravel removal, reprofiling of riverbanks and the straightening of channels. A permit or consent is needed in most cases before this work can be undertaken because it can destabilise rivers, causing changes to erosion and deposition processes, and potentially increase flood risk.
