Geraldo Perdomo shows poise in MLB debut

Geraldo Perdomo’s MLB debut arrived earlier than expected. The 21-year-old shortstop was recalled to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the alternate training site April 3 in place for Gold Glove shortstop Nick Ahmed, who was then placed on the 10-day Injured List. Perdomo made his big league debut later that night and went 1-for-10 at the plate before he was optioned back to the alternate training site April 10. For a prospect who never played above High-A Visalia in the minors, Perdomo showed poise and confidence. The statistics may seem disappointing on the surface, but plenty of optimism remains.

One of the biggest bargains of the 2016-17 international class, Geraldo Perdomo quickly worked his way through the Arizona system and earned his first Major League call up Saturday.
Perdomo, the D-backs’ No. 3 prospect (No. 78 overall), per MLB Pipeline, was recalled when Nick Ahmed was placed on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation. The 21-year-old has yet to play a game above the High-A level and his stint in the Majors isn’t expected to be lengthy, but he put together quality at-bats during Spring Training and is making his debut earlier than many would have anticipated.

Herrera has been around the Diamondbacks organization for a long time, having been signed out of Venezuela in 2013. He was regarded at that point as the top catcher in the international market, getting a seven-figure signing bonus, Normally, spending seven years without ever getting above High-A would not get you a spring invite. But Herrera only just turned 24 a couple of weeks ago, and the last time he played, for Visalia in 2019, he was below league average age. There is some baggage here, with a 50-game suspension handed down in April 2018, after Herrera tested positive for stimulants. I trust the relevant lessons have been learned.

The Diamondbacks system is vastly underrated. The group includes top-end talent, flame-throwers, high-floor guys, and everything else in between. What’s even better is that there are plenty of very fantasy-friendly prospects here as well. From Corbin Carroll’s 20/30 potential to Kristian Robinson’s 40 home run ceiling to Alek Thomas’s all-around game, there are fantasy gems all over the place. Recently the D-Backs have placed an emphasis on hard-throwing draft picks, and those guys are sprinkled throughout the system too.
Looking further down on the list shows some very safe bets, meaning there are likely many future major leaguers here. Granted, they may not become superstars, but there are regulars, utility guys, and solid bullpen options here to pick from. There is a lot to like and it’s starting to rival any of the top-end farm systems. With the team still acquiring prospects, it should only continue to get better in 2021.
