Debate over changes to listing rules roils U K

Debate over changes to listing rules roils U.K. Review looks to maintain governance standards and still attract capital Photo: Michael Walter/Troika Ashley Hamilton Claxton said there is tension between wanting good governance and attracting listings to London exchanges. Money managers and market players are split on whether recommendations to amend U.K. listing rules are a good idea from a governance point of view and the right way to attract more capital to London. The U.K. Listings Review, published last month and chaired by Lord Jonathan Hill, was launched by the U.K. chancellor of the exchequer in November to ensure the U.K. could stand up to stiff competition as a financial centre from the U.S., Asia and elsewhere in Europe, a document of the review said. Mr. Hill is a former European Commissioner, financial stability, financial services and Capital Markets Union.

Shareholder fear as firms may shun physical AGMs

Investors have voiced concerns over the future of annual general meetings as corporate giants scramble to decide whether to hold physical shareholder events for a second year.  Stock market stalwarts including Marks & Spencer and BT are considering whether to allow shareholders to physically attend their AGMs this summer as Britain eases out of lockdown.  Temporary legislation was introduced last year to allow companies to hold online-only AGMs due to the pandemic. The suspension, under the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act, expired last week. However, Covid restrictions on public gatherings in England will not be fully lifted until June 21.  Gathering storm: Stock market stalwarts including Marks & Spencer and BT are considering whether to allow shareholders to physically attend their AGMs this summer
