A construction crew accidentally struck a natural gas line on Monday, forcing several homes and businesses to be evacuated and traffic to be diverted, authorities said.
The work crew struck the gas line at 9:41 a.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Grove Street, Police Chief Joseph Bennett said in a release.
Main Street and all side streets were closed down after the incident.
“Traffic was diverted around the area and some businesses and homes in the immediate area were evacuated,” Bennett said in the release
The Hopkinton Fire Department took over the scene and was on hand to monitor the gas. Eversource was also on hand to monitor gas levels and shut down the line and repair the break.
