Photo credit: Benji Studt, PBC ERM The black skimmer, a shorebird with an underbite made for scooping prey on the fly, lives in a shrinking space along Florida’s beachy fringe, squished between rising seas and high-rises. A preference to lay its eggs in shallow dimples of wide-open sand has driven the skimmer from crowded coastlines to harsh gravel rooftops and crumbly roadsides vulnerable to cars. It’s also pushed the striking black-and-white seabird onto Florida’s threatened species list.
