Staff report The Fellowship of Christian Athletes Steel Valley recognized the March “Coach of the Month” with co-award winners John Grandy and Rob Gelonese, who have helped power Struthers FCA for decades. Retired Coach John Grandy has done it all, coaching from intramurals to multiple league and district championship in girls basketball, mentoring and caring for his players in football, girls and boys basketball, baseball, and cross country. He has served as a certified basketball official for eight years. Grandy said “there’s a difference between being a coach who is a Christian vs. a Christian coach. YSU announces speakers for May 7 and 8 commencement ceremonies

Lewis | Mahoning Matters) YOUNGSTOWN Youngstown State University announced that Ron Shaklee, Harold Danko and Kristin Fox will be the speakers at the three commencement ceremonies May 7 and 8 in Stambaugh Stadium. The in-person graduation ceremonies are scheduled for: 6 p.m. May 7 for all spring 2020, summer 2020 and fall 2020 graduates, whose commencements were held virtually and not in person last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic; 9 a.m. May 8 for spring 2021 graduates of YSU’s Cliffe College of Creative Arts, College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and Williamson College of Business Administration;  3 p.m. May 8 for spring 2021 graduates of YSU’s Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences and Education and Bitonte College of Health and Human Services.

Local speller eliminated from Scripps bee | News, Sports, Jobs

mkosinski@tribtoday.com WARREN A Bazetta boy who became the youngest student to win the Tribune Chronicle Scripps National Spelling Bee last year was eliminated from competition and will not move on for a chance to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee this summer. Phillip Gleason, son of Phillip and Heather Gleason, won the Tribune bee in 2020 at the age of 8. The national bee, which had been scheduled for Memorial Day weekend in Washington, D.C., was called off in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tribune Chronicle’s annual bee, which normally serves as a feeder bee to the national Scripps bee, was canceled this year because of the ongoing pandemic.

Struthers 7th-grader wins Spelling Bee | News, Sports, Jobs

Mar 14, 2021 YOUNGSTOWN A seventh-grade boy from Struthers lasted nine rounds to become grand champion of the 88th annual 21-WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee in downtown Youngstown on Saturday. Thirteen area school champions took part in the competition, which eventually was won by Christopher Dominick from Struthers Middle School, who won on the word “stalwart.” In the past, Christopher represented Struthers in the bee as a third-grader and also was scheduled to appear last year, but the bee was canceled just days prior to the event because of the pandemic. Due to COVID-19 restrictions this year, the event was open to limited family members only.
