Vernon Council moves to abolish historic group after chair refuses to resign

VERNON The chair of the town s Historic Preservation Commission refused the mayor s request to resign, so the Council took its first step Tuesday night to abolish the group.
The ordinance to do away with the commission received preliminary approval by the entire council and will require a public hearing and final vote at the Jan. 25 meeting.
Mayor Howard Burrell, said he supports the Council s move, and plans to appoint an informal advisory committee to absorb the functions formerly filled by the commission once it s abolished.

State police issued a call for help from the public Thursday to identify a man who the Sussex County Prosecutor s Office said died by suicide in Stokes State Forest last month.
The man, who was between the age of 20 and 40, was located by a hunter the morning of Dec. 8 about 300 yards off the Tower Trail, according to a Facebook post by police. The 1.6-mile trail connects to the Appalachian Trail, which stretches across the eastern edge of the Sandyston portion of Stokes State Forest.
Police said the man was 5-feet 7-inches tall and 171 pounds with a large scar on his right knee and several tattoos.
