CLAIR SHORES – Hatum Akrawi was sentenced Friday to eight to 15 years behind bars for manslaughter after a deadly assault at a St. Clair Shores bar in 2019. Akrawi sat in court and listened as the family of Shawn Kubic tearfully described the pain he caused. Despite the pleas from Kubic’s family, the judge sentenced Akrawi to eight to 15 years, two years shy of the maximum sentence. Akrawi’s attack was described as a sucker punch, but Judge Michael Servitto made it clear that it was much more. Akrawi waited until Kubic was at his most vulnerable inside Kapone’s Bar and hit him with every ounce of strength in his body.

St Clair Shores warns about elevated levels of lead in water system

The city tested 62 sites along the city’s lead service lines and found that eight of them exceeded 15 parts per billion, which is referred to as the Environmental Protection Agency’s “action level.” That triggers additional testing, among other measures. Still, no amount of lead is safe, the EPA has stressed. Of the city’s more than 26,000 water customers, about 2.7% – or 720 – rely on lead service lines. The city said it notified the homeowners with elevated levels of lead.

CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – A 19-year-old Eastpointe resident was shot during an incident near a bowling alley in St. Clair Shores. Police said they received a 911 call reporting shots fired at the Harbor Lanes Bowling Center on Tuesday at 8:52 p.m. When officers arrived on the scene they found one vehicle that had been struck by gunfire. Another vehicle was also struck by gunfire but had fled the scene. The vehicle that had fled the scene was traveling on the westbound I-94 service drive when the occupants flagged down a Harper Woods police officer and asked for help.
