COLUMBIA, S.C. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has signed a bill to help protect vulnerable adults against financial exploitation.
The measure allows financial institutions like banks and credit unions to report suspected exploitation to the South Carolina Department of Social Services and the office of the attorney general. The banks also have the power to decline, delay, or report transactions that are suspicious.
The bill defines vulnerable adults as those 55 and up. This gives us a way to nip things in the bud, McMaster said, arguing that many seniors are targeted by con artists.

In this year s state budget, Governor Henry McMaster requested the legislature to save funds to expand 4K.
In the state budget that began on July 1, the legislature allocated $37 million to expand 4K in the state. Of those funds, SC First Steps received $15.4M.

LEXINGTON, S.C. May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and the S.C. Department of Social Services (DSS) is trying to get new foster families, ahead of a virtual recruiting event on Thursday, May 20th.
According to DSS there are 4,056 children in care across the state. The three counties with the highest number of children in needing foster care are Richland County with over 500 kids, followed by Lexington County with 172 kids and Kershaw County with 87 kids needing care.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - A non-profit says they are partnering with the Department of Social Services to provide siblings of four-year-old’s enrolled in the First Steps 4K program with free child care and after-school scholarships.
SC First Steps and the SC Department of Social Services say their new scholarship program is called “First Steps 4K + Siblings”.
