Established entrepreneur builds national business in Chapel Hill

by Abbey Slattery May 21, 2021 . This article was written for our sponsor, the Town of Chapel Hill. Thanks to resources like Launch Chapel Hill and the Kenan-Flagler Entrepreneurship Center, Chapel Hill has an established reputation as a hotspot for startups. But as the startups fostered in the town grow, it’s also becoming a base for nationally recognized companies, as well. Take Sweetie Pie Organics, for example. After working with several instant formula and baby food companies, founder Liliana Cantrell recognized a need for organic, functional foods for breastfeeding moms. While she started her business in Chapel Hill, it has since grown to a nationwide level, with distribution in Target, Walmart, Harris Teeter and more, as well as on Amazon.

Spruce Mountain School District planning in-person learning in the fall

Read Article JAY Regional School Unit 73 directors Thursday approved the school calendar for 2021-22, assuming there will be in-person learning for Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls students. Classes for kindergarten through grade 12 would begin Wednesday, Sept. 1, with prekindergarten classes starting Tuesday, Sept. 7. Teacher workshops are set Aug. 30 and 31. Late-arrival Wednesdays would continue, with the exception of Sept. 22 when students would be released early, a tradition during the Farmington Fair. The calendar aligns with School Administrative District 58 in Phillips, Regional School Unit 78 in Rangeley, Regional School Unit 9 in Farmington, the schools that send students to Foster Career and Technical Education Center at the Mt. Blue Campus in Farmington, Superintendent Scott Albert said.

Many businesses that were impacted by the storm are located along Highway 90. “It ripped up the whole roof and that’s the reason the water is going in, through the roof, and the water is everywhere,” said Rick Virani, a business owner. While some businesses are closed due to the cleanup, Virani said he is thankful no one was hurt.

Spruce Mountain School District's nearly $20.75 million budget goes to voters April 27

• Article 1 asks to appropriate nearly $20.75 million and raise $10.16 million. • Article 2 authorizes the school board to transfer amounts exceeding 5% of the total appropriation for any cost center to or among other cost center(s), provided the budget isn’t increased. • Article 3 asks to appropriate $862,229.33 and raise $240,000 ($80,000 for each town) for the food service program. • Article 4 asks to appropriate $373,267.48 and raise $198,000 ($66,000 for each town) for adult education. “If each of these articles passes, total taxes will decrease $61,348.8 in Jay,” Albert said. “They will increase $14,851.19 in Livermore and $27,947.62 in Livermore Falls.” A home valued at $100,000 in Jay would see no increase; one in Livermore would be taxed $7 more than this fiscal year; one in Livermore Falls would be taxed $16.20 more than this fiscal year.
