Streets to close starting next month during Salem Saturday Market

View Comments Vehicles won t have access to portions of Winter St NE and Union St NE in the downtown area starting Aug. 7  in an attempt to aid bicyclists, pedestrians and vendors at the Salem Saturday Market.  The Salem City Council approved a plan Monday that closes portions of the neighboring streets during market hours to encourage alternative modes of transportation. The Salem Saturday Market part of Salem Community Markets  is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday, typically April through October. The market takes place at 865 Marion St NE, on the corner of Summer and Marion, north of the Capital Mall. The market celebrated its 23rd anniversary this year.

Chicago-based artist to paint Naumkeag portrait for Salem City Hall Work on public art piece will commence in the fall Wicked Local “It’s the most the city has ever received for submissions, so that was really exciting,” Julie Barry, the city’s senior planner for arts and culture, told the Salem Gazette on Monday. “Fifty-nine were deemed eligible, and we landed on four finalists whom we then interviewed.”   On Monday, the city announced it had found its awardee for the Naumkeag Portrait Project: Chris Padden, a Chicago-based artist of Kanza, Osage and Lakota descent. Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Pappan studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts.
