TRIBUTE An artist who faced down the worst of times with indomitable spirit

AT A time when we have been deprived of live theatre for over a year, I can think of no-one as inspiring, no-one who proves more vividly why theatre matters as it faces an uncertain future than Oscar Castro, who died of Covid in Paris on April 25 at the age of 73. Oscar’s saga began, like that of so many of his compatriots, when the Chilean military overthrew the democratically elected government of socialist Salvador Allende in September 1973 and installed a reign of terror. While many of Chile’s cultural figures I was among them opted for exile, my friend Oscar decided to stay behind and test the limits of the regime’s ferocious censorship.

How Theater Can Help Us Survive

Michael Urie and Ryan Spahn to Star in The Zoo Story This Summer

(© Allison Stock) Michael Urie and Ryan Spahn will star in a live production of Edward Albee s The Zoo Story this summer at Guild Hall, the historic arts institution in East Hampton, Long Island. The outdoor staging will be directed by Nathan Winkelstein, associate artistic director of Red Bull Theater. The one-act, Albee s first play, finds two men, one a successful publishing executive, the other, a desperate vagrant, meeting on a park bench and having a life-changing moment of connection. Urie will play Jerry, and Spahn will play Peter. The outdoor production will require mandatory mask-wearing for all patrons over the age of 2, and audience members are asked to bring their own blankets or chairs. Tickets are $100 for two people.
