20-year old Scott Sanders, a sophomore in Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, practices his French horn several times a week on the fifth floor of the Segal Visitors Center parking garage.
The powerful sound reverberates throughout the garage, and also wafts across campus, which is how I came upon the young man who brings Mozart instead of Mazdas to the parking deck.
My wife Jennifer and I were enjoying a late Tuesday afternoon walk through the NU campus, when we heard the sound of music. Not the movie. Just the sound.
Waiting for her March 26 admissions decision from Northwestern, Sofía Meléndez said she felt two emotions –– anxiety and excitement.
Once her phone buzzed with an email notification, Meléndez said she mustered all her courage and opened the decision letter, letting out a joyful scream when she saw she was admitted into the class of 2025.
“That entire day had just been a complete build-up of anxiety,” Meléndez said. “So when I saw that decision, my first instinct was to cry and call all my friends. I was so overwhelmed.”
NU admissions have always been competitive, and the pandemic only heightened this difficulty. The University saw its lowest acceptance rate in history this year, admitting just 6.8 percent of the 47,633 first-year applicants this year.

President Morton Schapiro, who has led Northwestern University through one of its most transformative and sustained periods of academic growth, announced today (March 4) that he will conclude his tenure on Aug. 31, 2022.
Since Schapiro took office in September 2009 as the 16th president in Northwestern’s 170-year history, the University has elevated its status as a premier university for research and teaching.
“During President Schapiro’s tenure, Northwestern has further established itself as one of the world’s very finest academic institutions,” said J.
