This week, we re revisiting the Seattle Asian Art Museum, honoring saints at Saint Bread, and celebrating the Marshall Law Band and Tres Leches in-person. Check out all our top recommendations for this week below. Getty Images This week, and at certain times of the day, the tides will be exceptionally low for our few and usually not spectacular beaches. And why should this be of interest to you? For one, low tides (by nearly 4 feet on Friday at 12:58 pm) expose the strange-looking creatures whose niche is that area where life transitioned from the sea to land millions of years ago. Beaches at low tides are holy places, in the evolutionary rather than religious sense. But Darwin is not the only Englishman to consider during a very low tide. There is also Isaac Newton. He provided the world with the first comprehensive theor

The Poverty of Excess

REVIEWS It has been, oh, 14 and a half months since I last went to the movies. The opportunity has arisen, recently, with the advent of COVID-19 vaccines and, before that, a collective denial/resignation/relaxing of the guard due to fatigue, frustration and, in some cases, willful ignorance. But because of the embarrassment of riches brought to us by the age of streaming services (and because I m a recluse at heart) I haven t felt compelled to go. Regular readers of this column (if there are any) are all too familiar with my litany of complaints about other people and their poor manners poisoning the theatrical experience; the outbreak of plague was really an excuse to not leave the house.

Hidden Dragon: The Sword of Destiny), a cook at a Chinese restaurant who was a legendary kung fu master. All went their separate ways after a falling-out over a trip to Japan to compete professionally. But when Sifu dies of unexplained heart attack, Hing suspects foul play, and they must reunite, juggling dead-end jobs, dad duties and old grudges to set things right and restore honor to their names. The Paper Tigers is light, silly, and made on a meager budget, but it’s also made with love. Tran clearly cares about the movie he’s making, and he’s injected it with a lot of heart and some memorable character interaction. The titular trio is terrific, and I had a hard time getting over the fact that Uy’s filmography is so small he has such a dynamic star presence. Ron Yuan as Hing may be one of the most likable performances I’ve seen this year, and the chemistry between them is genuine.

The Paper Tigers

The Plot: Once known as the Kung Fu prodigies “The Three Tigers,” the trio of martial artists are now middle-aged men one kick away from a pulled muscle. Their master teacher, Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan), is murdered, which springs them into action. The childhood friends reunite to avenge him, as they juggle dead-end jobs, dad duties and old grudges. Lynn’s Take: A crisp throwback to the ‘90s era of martial arts movies, “The Paper Tigers” is a warm-hearted exercise in reconnecting friendships and rekindling your purpose. First-time director Quoc Bao Tran, who also wrote the screenplay, has assembled a trio of likable actors whose chemistry is palpable for this action comedy: Alain Uy as Danny, a divorced dad who works in insurance; Ron Yuan as Hing, out-of-shape trash talker who used to work in hotel security; and Mykel Shannon Jenkins as Jim, who has been estranged from Danny.
