New Hope students rewarded after raising $12,000 for heart association

Students of New Hope Elementary watched their principal get covered in slime Thursday afternoon as a reward for helping create a healthier nation. Through the Kids Heart Challenge, students New Hope students raised more than $12,000 for the American Heart Association during February - more than triple the amount the school raised in 2020.  Students were tasked with recruiting friends, family, neighbors and community members to donate to the Texas-based nonprofit.  “We are so, so glad we could help save lives and donate this money to the American Heart Association,” said Shelly Burke, the school’s PE teacher.  Burke has coordinated the fundraiser at the school for the last eight years, though she has been compelled to help raise money for the American Heart Association for more than two decades.

On Jan. 7, 2021, the U.S. hit another grim milestone, for the first time recording over 300,000 new cases of COVID-19 and over 4,000 deaths from the infection in one day. Across the country, hospitals and intensive care units are now under enormous strain trying to treat so many sick people. And if a new, more transmissible variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, were to take hold in the U.S. as it has in the U.K., as seems plausible, our health system could pass its breaking point.
