A doctor has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List for his services to medical education. Dr Azeem Alam, from Harpenden, has used his company BiteMedicine to provide free education for medical students, physician associates and aspiring doctors during the coronavirus pandemic. He has now taught more than 10,000 students worldwide via online, live webinars. The 28-year-old, who is from the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, has received the British Empire Medal for his work. Dr Alam, who has worked in the emergency department during the pandemic, said: “After receiving the initial email that I had been recommended by the Prime Minister for the honour of a British Empire Medal, I was in complete disbelief, and still am. I told my family as soon as I was able to and they were equally shocked.

Top New Year Honours for Imperial academics
A leading Imperial economist is made a Dame in the 2021 New Year Honours, which also recognise an engineer, a neurologist and a medic from Imperial.
Professor Dame Carol Propper from Imperial College Business School has received a Damehood for her contribution to economics and public health.
Also recognised is Visiting Professor Raad Shakir from the Department of Medicine, who receives a CBE for services to global neurology. Visiting Professor James Calder, from the Department of Bioengineering, receives an OBE for services to sport and to exercise. Dr Azeem Alam, an honorary clinical research fellow in the Department of Surgery and Cancer, has been awarded a British Empire Medal for outstanding contributions to medical education during COVID-19.

The New Year Honours List 2021 was notable for its recognition of workers in the public and private sectors who went the extra mile during the Covid-19 public health pandemic.
These include digital and data professionals working for supermarket chain Asda. Daniel Owens, online grocery development manager at Asda Stores, was awarded an MBE for “services to retail customers during the Covid-19 Response”, as was Connor Wilkinson, head of e-commerce data at Asda.
Residents across South London and North Kent have been named in the Queen s New Year s Honours List. A junior doctor from Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust and a Swanley safeguarding campaigner from Swanley are a among those named in the Queen s New Years Honours List.
