Unemployment overtime: TN struggles to keep up with claims By Jessica Jaglois | February 26, 2021 at 8:44 AM CST - Updated February 26 at 9:15 AM
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The pandemic has forced 1.07 million Tennesseans to file for unemployment for the first time.
The state is struggling to process the surge in claims, even with more manpower and more overtime than ever before.
Memphis resident Arnita Cole is waiting for her unemployment money.
Last March, Cole was laid off from the temp agency that assigned her to Graceland.
“I liked it. I took pictures with guests and they would send me pictures,” said Cole. “But with COVID, we couldn’t work.”

Louisiana paid $346M in unemployment benefits in January
The Louisiana Workforce Commission says it paid out $346 million in unemployment benefits to almost 197,000 people in January.
The Workforce Commission says it has cleared most of a 30,000-claim backlog from early this month, though almost 3,500 of those claims await additional review.
“The vast majority of the claims remaining in our queue are from claimants whose home address does not match that on their ID,” LWC Secretary Ava Dejoie said. “Many have a Louisiana address but an out of state driver’s license.
These cases take longer to process as we continue to combat and prevent fraud.”
