Elected officials fought over two critical parts of Wisconsin’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) program: Should the jobless be required to apply for four jobs per week to get benefits? Is it time to end the additional $300 per week federal benefit, added to state benefits, because of the pandemic? Time to hear from someone who has fought so hard to stay in Wisconsin’s middle class over almost two years that he doesn’t have time to follow the Capitol machinations of Republicans and Democrats

Wisconsin job growth was tepid in April, with employment opportunities rising but also more people entering the labor force, according to the state Department of Workforce Development (DWD). While the state has recovered a substantial number of the jobs that were lost in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, employment remains below the pre-pandemic peak in February 2020, DWD reported. The total number of people working rose by about 7,100 in April compared with a month earlier. At the same time, however, the number of people looking for work rose by 2,000. Taken together, the number of people working and looking for work in Wisconsin totaled 3.075 million, according to DWD. With more people now in the labor force in April compared with March, the state’s unemployment rate crept up to 3.9%.

Unemployment Tax Break Bill Muddied by Partisan Conflict

A proposed tax break for people who lost their jobs and collected unemployment during the COVID-19 pandemic got a boost Wednesday but it also got snared in the Legislature’s recurring party-line conflicts. While the bill, SB-267, was introduced by Democrats, it passed the Senate Labor and Regulatory Reform Committee on a 3-2 vote Wednesday, and both Democrats on the committee voted against it. The legislation would waive state income taxes in 2020 and 2021 on the first $10,200 of unemployment compensation that a taxpayer receives in either year.
