With the holiday season over and a coronavirus spike expected food pantries are bracing for an increased need, and challenges in keeping clients and volunteers safe. Based on the increased number of customers during the last two months coupled with COVID 19, we are expecting an increase demand for the pantry s food, said Robert LaPorte, of the Chelmsford Food Pantry, also known as the Chelmsford Exchange.
LaPorte is among the volunteers who have stepped up following the death of food pantry founder Sandie Donovan.
Volunteers took on a growing role as Donovan s declining health affected her ability to run the food pantry.

The Westford Food Pantry is a recipient of additional funding from the Middlesex Savings Bank, a mutual bank in Massachusetts.
The bank announced additional funding from its charitable foundation’s $1 million COVID-19 relief fund.
In this fourth wave of grant distribution, the Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation is providing 33 local food pantries each with a $10,000 contribution to support their response to the pandemic.

Stoneybrook Saddle Club holds virtual food drive

This year, the Stoneybrook Saddle Club of Westford, an equestrian 4-H club, hosted a virtual food drive.
Amongst the COVID-19 pandemic, it was impossible to do our usual food drive at Market Basket, so we had to improvise in order to keep the event going. Each family was asked to collect as much non-perishable food as possible to donate to the Westford Food Pantry. The Westford Food Pantry has been helping keep food on our community tables for years and we are honored to contribute annually.
This year, the virtual food drive collected 640 pounds of food between our 29 members, which was 114 more than last year! We hope to keep up the drive for years to come, pandemic or not!
