(HCP Photo/Caitlin Forsha) The Whiteoak Wildcats are set to send two athletes to the OHSAA Division III State Track and Field Championships, and in doing so, they’ve broken a streak of multiple years of not having a state qualifier in either the boys or girls program. In the boys event, Whiteoak will have senior Nick Bailey competing in two events, with those being the long jump and the 100-meter dash. For the girls, junior and first-year track runner Lydia Kittner qualified for state in the 400-meter dash.

Notebook: Hilliard Bradley Jaguars boys volleyball team enjoys whirlwind day The seniors on the Hilliard Bradley boys volleyball team had an unforgettable day May 28. The second-seeded Jaguars defeated seventh-seeded Dublin Jerome 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 in a Division I, East Region final at 5 p.m. that Friday to qualify for state for the first time since 2012. After the victory, they were shuttled to another milestone, high school graduation at 7 p.m. in Ohio State’s Schottenstein Center. Senior outside hitter Jonah Gilbert had 37 kills in the match, which took approximately 70 minutes to play. Gilbert was pleased with the outcome but wanted to get to graduation.

Recent Westerville grads set up scholarship for fellow students of color Allison Ward, The Columbus Dispatch © Courtesy of Ameena Freeman Ameena Freeman, a 2020 graduate of Westerville North High School who helped found a scholarship for students of color at each Westerville high school. When protests against police brutality and systemic racism broke out nationwide last summer, Westerville was among the communities where people held rallies and put up Black Lives Matters signs.  Some teens in the northern suburb wanted to do more, though, to create lasting change.   A year later, they’re seeing that change in action as a group of recent graduates of Westerville City Schools helped raise enough money to award three $1,500 scholarships to high school students of color within the district. It’s called the “One Westerville Scholarship.”
